Senior Advisor, Energy and Environment
Terry Tamminen is the senior advisor of energy and environment for NSI, where he is one of the nation’s leading authorities on environmental policy. In addition to his role at NSI, Mr. Tamminen serves as an operating advisor to Pegasus Capital Advisors, a private equity firm that invests in cleantech business, and advises Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on energy and environmental policy, as well as several other governors, Candian Premiers, European Union leaders and environmental organizations.
In 2008, the Guardian ranked Terry No. 1 in its “Top 50 People Who Can Save the Planet” ranking, and in 2007, he was named the Cullman senior fellow and director of the climate policy program of the New America Foundation, a non-profit, post-partisan, public policy institute.
In December 2004, Mr. Tamminen was appointed as cabinet secretary and chief policy advisor to Governor Schwarzenegger following his appointment as secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency in November 2003.
Mr. Tamminen has developed expertise in business, farming, education, non-profit, environment, arts and government and has career experiences in Europe, Africa and the United States. Mr. Tamminen’s environmental activism began in the early 1990s when he founded the Santa Monica Bay Keeper organization and served as executive director for six years.
Mr. Tamminen has received numerous awards and honors for his achievements, including Vanity Fair’s May 2007 Environmental hero, Solar Champion 2006, Visionary Leadership Award 2005 and Clean Air Leadership Award 2005. He was also featured in TIME Magazine’s Earthday 2007 edition as one of the “51 Things to Solve Global Warming” April 2007. Mr. Tamminen has also served on several civic and charitable boards and commissions, including the Southern California Wetlands Recovery Project, the U.S. Navy Pt. Mugu Naval Air Station Restoration Advisory Board, the Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbor Safety Committee and the Wishtoyo Foundation, a group that preserves natural resources through Chumash Indian traditional teachings.
Mr. Tamminen’s latest book, Lives Per Gallon: The True Cost of Our Oil Addiction (Island Press), is a timely examination of our dependence on oil and a strategy to evolve to more sustainable energy sources. He has also authored a series of best-selling Ultimate Guides to Pools and Spas (McGraw-Hill) and several theatrical works on the life of William Shakespeare. Mr. Tamminen is an avid airplane and helicopter pilot and speaks German, Dutch and Spanish.
